How to Customize the Registration & Login Success Message in WordPress

Last Updated: 6 mins By: Rabin Shrestha

Want to change what your users see right after they register or log in? By default, WordPress and most registration plugins show a generic confirmation message – not exactly the warm welcome you probably want.

This guide shows you how to customize the registration success message using the User Registration & Membership plugin, what actually happens when a user confirms their email address, and what your real options are if you’re hoping for a custom login success message too.

Let’s get into it.

What Is a Registration Success Message?

A registration success message is the text a new user sees immediately after submitting your registration form – confirming their account was created and telling them what to do next (log in, check their email, wait for approval, and so on).

User Registration & Membership doesn’t use just one generic message for this. It gives you five separate messages, each tied to a specific registration scenario, so what a user sees actually matches what’s happening with their account.

How to Customize the Registration Success Message

Go to WordPress Dashboard >> User Registration & Membership >> Settings >> Registration & Login, then open the Messages tab.

You’ll see a card titled Success Messages. On the free plugin, that’s five separate fields:

  • Auto Approval And Manual Login – shown when a user registers and can log in immediately, no approval or email confirmation required. Default text: “User successfully registered.”
  • Auto Approval After Email Confirmation – shown right after a user submits the form, before they’ve clicked the confirmation link in their email.
  • Email Verification Completed – shown after a user clicks the confirmation link (more on this below – it’s not quite as simple as it sounds).
  • Admin Approval – shown when a new account needs manual admin approval before the user can log in.
  • Membership Registration – shown specifically when the registration form is tied to a membership plan.

Each field is a plain text box – edit the text, then save changes. Whichever scenario applies to a given user determines which message they actually see.

Note: These fields don’t support merge tags or placeholders (like inserting the user’s name) – they’re static text. If you need dynamic content in a registration message, that’s a developer-level customization, not a Settings-tab option.

Running Pro or Membership? You’ll see two extra fields on this same card – Auto Generated Password Success Message and Email Verified Admin Approval Pending – covering Pro-only account flows. They work the same way as the five above; this guide just doesn’t walk through those two specifically.

What Happens When Users Confirm Their Email

If your form uses email confirmation, there’s a second confirmation moment most tutorials skip entirely – and it’s worth understanding, because it’s not handled the same way as the message above.

When a user clicks the verification link in their confirmation email, they’re not shown a message on your registration form. They’re redirected to your WordPress login page, and a message is injected there instead. This is a genuinely separate mechanism from the Success Messages settings above, and it behaves like this:

  1. If verification succeeds and no admin approval is required, the plugin shows your “Email Verification Completed” message on the login page, and can automatically log the user in for you (this is enabled by default).
  2. If verification succeeds but admin approval is also required, a different message tells the user their email is verified and they’re waiting on approval.
  3. If the link is expired or the token doesn’t match (say, a user clicks an old email), the plugin shows an error message – but this one is fixed. It isn’t editable from Settings, so don’t go looking for it there.

Pro Tip: When auto-login is enabled, the plugin also fires a small toast notification confirming the verification. That toast’s text isn’t a Settings-tab field either – it’s controlled by a PHP filter, so changing it means adding a small snippet, not clicking through the admin.

Is There a Login Success Message?

Here’s the honest answer: no, not as a dedicated setting. User Registration & Membership (and WordPress itself) don’t include an admin-customizable message shown after a normal username-and-password login, the way there is for registration.

If you want to give returning users a tailored experience after login, your best options are:

  • Redirect after login to a custom page. Go to User Registration & Membership >> Login Form >> Settings >> Advanced and toggle on Enable Custom Redirect, then set Redirect After Login to “Internal Page” and pick the page – a “Welcome back” page, a dashboard, whatever fits – instead of the default. This is a real setting, and it’s the closest thing to a “login success message” you can configure without writing code.
  • For developers: WordPress’s native login_redirect filter gives you full control over where a user lands and what they see after login, if a redirect-to-a-page isn’t flexible enough.

If a plugin or tutorial claims a one-click “login success message” setting exists, it’s either describing this redirect option loosely, or it’s simply inaccurate.

Frequently Asked Questions About Registration & Login Success Messages

Can I use the same message for every registration scenario?

You could enter the same text in all five fields, but it defeats the purpose – each message is shown at a different point in a different flow, so tailoring them (especially the admin-approval and email-confirmation ones) gives users a much clearer picture of what’s actually happening with their account.

Do I need a Pro plan to customize these messages?

No. The five registration Success Messages fields are all available in the free version of User Registration & Membership.

Can I add the user’s name to a success message?

Not through the Settings fields – they’re static text with no merge-tag support. Adding dynamic content like a user’s name requires a small code snippet using the plugin’s filter hooks.

What’s the difference between a success message and an email notification?

They’re two separate systems. Success messages are text shown on your site (on the form, or on the login page after email confirmation) – no email involved. Email Notifications, under Settings >> Emails, are actual emails sent to the user, like the “Registration Success” email confirming signup. You can customize both, but they don’t affect each other.

Why does my email-confirmation error message look different from what I set?

Because it’s not editable. The “token expired” and “token mismatch” messages after a broken or old confirmation link are fixed text in the plugin, not a Settings option – that’s a real limitation, not a bug.

Wrapping Up

Between the five registration Success Messages and the page-level messages shown after email confirmation, User Registration & Membership gives you more control over the post-registration experience than a single generic message would suggest – you just have to know where to look.

A dedicated login success message isn’t one of the plugin’s settings, but a custom login redirect gets you most of the way there.
